The Georgina Island Storytelling Project

Our stories celebrate our heritage and identity as Chippewa people. They preserve and teach our Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge for the future generations of Georgina Island. In the tradition of oral history over generations, our youth - in their turn - will carry on this legacy to protect and share our proud history and who we are as the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

Effective Today

Dear Cottagers and Leaseholders,

Due to the current uncertainty and changing conditions on the lake, the Aazhaawe will be operating for Band Members only at this time.

We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to monitor lake and operating conditions closely.

Leaseholders and cottagers will be notified as soon as the vessel is able to reopen for public use. Security has been notified and all non-essential travellers will be turned away at the ferry dock.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Chief and Council

Dear Community Members, Contractors, and Leaseholders,

We have recently experienced a significant increase in ferry usage due to ongoing construction and higher travel volumes. To ensure smooth operations and prioritize community needs, Chief and Council have designated the following blackout dates for construction vehicles, including contractor vehicles, on the Aazhaawe ferry for 2026.

Please note:

Blackout Dates for Construction Vehicles:

Additionally, no hauling will be permitted on Fridays during July and August. This means oversized trucks and vehicles will not have access to the ferry on those Fridays throughout the summer.

Please refer to the attached 2026 calendar for a complete list of blackout dates. These restrictions apply to all construction vehicles and deliveries.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to support our community.

The Chippewas of Georgina Island Powwow 2024

Held once again at Sutton District High School

We are excited to announce the return of the annual Brett Mooney Charity Golf Classic on Friday August 9th, 2024!

The tournament will taking place at Cedarhurst Golf Club, located at 4-825 Concession Rd, Beaverton, Ontario.

Brett was a proud GIFN member and leader who loved his community. He was always assisting others in any way he could. With this annual golf tournament we continue to carry out his goodwill by donating all funds raised to a community member who is battling an illness.

Georgina Island First Nation – Broadband Extension Project Notice

Georgina Island First Nation was successful in securing funding under the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) –  Universal Broadband Fund to complete an extension of broadband internet infrastructure across the Island. The project will greatly improve broadband connectivity to all underserved households on the Island. This project builds off the success of the recently completed YorkNet extension project that brought fibre infrastructure to the Island which now services our community buildings.

Construction will begin the week of September 27th, 2021 and will continue into Summer of 2022. Household hook-ups will be scheduled in the coming months.  We are asking that if you have any private utilities between the road and your house that was not previously marked with locate flags to contact us as soon as possible.

Please contact the internet service provider (ISP) Coextro at www.coextro.com/Georgina or 1-888-552-9516 for more information on how to sign-up for connection to broadband internet services.  The cut off date for signing up for the free installation is October 8, 2021.  After that the cost will be determined and you will be billed for the work prior to commencing.

Please contact Brian Lee, Senior Contract Administrator for S. Burnett & Associates Limited, at brian.lee@sbaengineering.com for any questions related to construction works.
