The Georgina Island Storytelling Project

Our stories celebrate our heritage and identity as Chippewa people. They preserve and teach our Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge for the future generations of Georgina Island. In the tradition of oral history over generations, our youth - in their turn - will carry on this legacy to protect and share our proud history and who we are as the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

A big thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation!

The Chippewas of Georgina Island would like to recognize and thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the Capital Grant we received in 2018 for the Buzzy Big Canoe Memorial Arena to add washrooms and change rooms to this facility.

Since 1999, this volunteer-run facility has been a hub for all kinds of community recreation events including ice hockey and ball hockey, summer day camp, family fun skates, basketball games and garage sales. The construction of accessible washrooms and changerooms greatly enhances this multi-purpose community facility. Public services such as washrooms encourage people to engage in activities at the arena, knowing that there is a place “to go”. The new washrooms and changerooms make the facility more family friendly. There is now a warm place for athletes to change into their equipment and children no longer have to take off snowsuits in a portable out house in the winter!

Well-maintained public washrooms and change rooms make the Buzzy Big Canoe Memorial Arena more inclusive for people of all ages.  We’d like to say another big miigwech to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their support!

Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation Chief Donna Big Canoe wants Georgina Council to take an official position on the region’s Upper York Sewage Solution.

If approved, the $685-million project that would provide additional servicing for the more than 150,000 new people and jobs projected for Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury by 2031, would dump more than 40 million litres of treated wastewater per day into the Lake Simcoe Watershed.

Big Canoe referred to the “glaring issue” in a Jan. 28 letter to Mayor Margaret Quirk, which was included on the agenda for the March 6 meeting of town council….

Chippewas of Georgina Island Community Members

Ahneen!

My name is Dani Cotton and I am currently working for the band office on an important project: I am gathering stories, photographs, and information about our people to include in a book about the history of the Chippewas of Georgina Island. This book is being created to tell the stories of our community so they will not be lost and this way we can ensure our story is told our way. Through our stories, which span decades and encompass many topics determined to be important and characteristic of our people, we can retain our culture and pass our knowledge onto others. Therefore, I am seeking to acquire the stories of our people and to access photographs, news articles, etc. that may pertain to the Chippewas of Georgina Island and the following topics:

I would greatly appreciate any and all contribution you, as members of all ages, may have. This book is dependent on the stories of our people and it would be wonderful to be able to pass information through to further generations, as well as those seeking knowledge. Our stories are important and help people to understand us. This is a great opportunity to be heard.

Please reach me at Dani.Cotton@georginaisland.com, through the band office at 705-437-1337 or feel free to approach me if you see me
