The Georgina Island Storytelling Project

Our stories celebrate our heritage and identity as Chippewa people. They preserve and teach our Indigenous ways of knowing and knowledge for the future generations of Georgina Island. In the tradition of oral history over generations, our youth - in their turn - will carry on this legacy to protect and share our proud history and who we are as the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

Aaniin Georgina Island community members;

It is our honour to be working with the Education Authority on Georgina Island, and all of you, to complete a school review, and plan collaboratively for future educational needs of your children and youth.

We are a husband and wife team of educators- our work in First Nations education is based on our combined experiences in various First Nation & provincial schools over the past 33 years:

We have completed several school reviews in other First Nation communities, and have found that the best results come from partnering with community members, parents and staff to listen and collect input from the “experts” on the ground- all of you!

Please take a few minutes to complete the surveys you will be receiving, either on paper or electronically, so that we can hear your thoughts and include your perspectives in this report.

You know best what is working for the students of Georgina Island, what needs to change and how best to move forward. We would be most grateful for your involvement!

Alison and Jeff

Chippewas of Georgina Island Community Members

Ahneen!

My name is Dani Cotton and I am currently working for the band office on an important project: I am gathering stories, photographs, and information about our people to include in a book about the history of the Chippewas of Georgina Island. This book is being created to tell the stories of our community so they will not be lost and this way we can ensure our story is told our way. Through our stories, which span decades and encompass many topics determined to be important and characteristic of our people, we can retain our culture and pass our knowledge onto others. Therefore, I am seeking to acquire the stories of our people and to access photographs, news articles, etc. that may pertain to the Chippewas of Georgina Island and the following topics:

I would greatly appreciate any and all contribution you, as members of all ages, may have. This book is dependent on the stories of our people and it would be wonderful to be able to pass information through to further generations, as well as those seeking knowledge. Our stories are important and help people to understand us. This is a great opportunity to be heard.

Please reach me at Dani.Cotton@georginaisland.com, through the band office at 705-437-1337 or feel free to approach me if you see me

A message from the Chippewas of Georgina Island Public Works Department

Winter Tips and Information

Winter Safety: This winter, we want to ensure safety above all. Please review the information below as a refresher for the coming season. Public and Workplace safety are a priority for us.

Driving:  Take your time and drive according to the road and weather conditions.  Plan ahead and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, especially when the time comes for ice road driving. Purchase a car charger for your cell phone and keep at least half of a tank of gas in your car at all times in case of emergency.

We use a salt/sand mixture for winter maintenance of the roads and parking lots to combat snow and ice. This salt/sand mixture is used sparingly as we are conscious of our close connection to the lake and the damage  runoff can do .

Winter Maintenance: The snowplows maintain the road and travel at a speed that ensures the snow is plowed out into the ditch area.  Please make sure to have any personal items or vehicles that could be hit or buried are at least 10 – 15 feet from the road.  Plowing is done in a priority sequence as determined by the Department.

All garbage bins must be clear of snow and accessible to the public works worker.

Emergency Muster Station: In the event of a prolonged power outage the Community Centre has a generator and will be open for anyone and their families to come and warm up or cook a meal.

Your Home: Stock your home with several flashlights and the corresponding batteries.  Purchase a battery-powered radio.  Try not to open your fridge and freezers unless necessary.
